A Small Restaurant's Real Flyer Campaign: What Worked and What Didn't

Instead of another generic "types of flyers" list, let's walk through an actual local marketing scenario and what it teaches about flyer design decisions.

The Scenario

A neighborhood restaurant wanted to promote a new weekend thali menu. They printed 500 A5 flyers at a local press for roughly ₹2 per flyer (₹1,000 total) and handed them out near a busy market junction over two weekends.

What Didn't Work

The first version used a full-bleed food photo with white text overlaid directly on the image. It looked good on screen but was almost unreadable in bright daylight outdoors, where most flyers actually get handed out and read. Contrast, not composition, was the failure point — a mistake that's invisible until you test a printed flyer outside rather than judging it on a laptop screen.

What Worked

The revised version used a solid color block behind the text instead of placing it directly over the photo, with the food photo confined to one-third of the flyer rather than the whole background. Response — measured crudely by how many people mentioned the flyer when redeeming the discount code printed on it — roughly tripled between version 1 and version 2.

The Real Cost-Per-Response Math

ItemCost
500 flyers printed (A5, single side, color)₹1,000
2 weekend staff hours for distribution₹600
Redemptions tracked via discount code34 customers
Approx. cost per redeemed customer₹47

For context, that's competitive with — often cheaper than — a single boosted Instagram post targeting the same radius, and it reaches people who may not follow the restaurant online at all.

Three Design Rules This Taught Us

  1. Test outdoors, not on-screen. Print one copy and look at it in daylight before ordering 500.
  2. One offer, not three. The first draft tried to promote the thali menu, a loyalty card, and a delivery number all at once — trimming to just the thali offer with a single QR code improved recall.
  3. Put the expiry date in large text. "Valid till [date]" in small print gets ignored; making it as prominent as the offer itself is what actually drives urgency.

Choosing Between a Free Template and a Custom Design

A free flyer template gets you 80% of the way for almost any local promotion — event, sale, menu launch. Where it's worth paying a designer instead: recurring campaigns where brand consistency across dozens of flyers matters, or highly regulated content (like pricing disclosures) where a template's placeholder text might not match legal requirements in your state.
